UKATA certification Asbestos Removal
Roofing Contracts and Building are trained under UKATA certification to carry out Non notifiable, non-licensed works with asbestos under the following critical conditions:-
- Materials must be bonded products in reasonably good condition (ie weathered sand of some age but retaining their structural integrity, not breaking down or friable) and removeable in whole sheets without breaking them.
- The products may be typically bonded:-
- Asbestos cement roofing, gutters, fascia, flues, vents, cowls, drainpipes and associated materials; These will typically contain 10-15% chrysotile (white) but may contain other asbestos fibres such as Crocidolite (blue) or Grunerite (brown).
- Floor tiles and other thermoplastic products;
- Bitumen and resign bonded products such as felt and DPC or bakelite;
- Textured coatings.
- The material can be removed or repaired without deliberate damage.
- Fixings and fittings can be safely removed using manual tools without damaging the material.
- The work is of short-duration or split between gangs.
- The release of asbestos fibres is fully controlled through disciplined and deliberate work, wetting down and following the guidance in HSG210-Asbestos essentials.
- Waste is managed by immediate double-wrapping or bagging and placing carefully in suitable waste containers for transfer under controlled conditions to license hazardous waste disposal landfill.
- Staff will control the area using fencing or tape and not allow any persons on site during works.
- Staff will be fully suited and wearing suitable respiratory protective equipment.
- Waste is stored in locked and labelled containers until removed from site.
What is cement-bonded asbestos?
Today, the health dangers of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are well known; yet many older commercial and industrial sites across the nation still use cement-bonded asbestos products.
This mixture of white asbestos (aka chrysotile) and cement often shows up in corrugated roof sheeting, wall cladding sheets, cement guttering/drainage pipes and some types of loose ceiling insulation.
What’s the risk?
All kinds of asbestos materials – including cement asbestos products – can release hazardous fibres into the air if they’re damaged or disturbed. These fibres can cause a number of fatal and life-affecting lung conditions if they’re inhaled.
According to the HSE, thousands of workers still die from asbestos exposure every year in the UK.
Any commercial or industrial which was built before 2000, contains older equipment, and/or sits on a brownfield site may contain asbestos. If you’re an owner of non-domestic property, or you’re responsible for the repair and maintenance of said property, you have a legal duty to manage the potential risks of asbestos.
Intact cement asbestos materials are non-notifiable and can be legally removed by anyone. However, carrying out your own asbestos removal without the proper training can often have fatal consequences; for you, your staff and/or the people around you.
It’s always best to seek out an asbestos professional with the equipment and expertise to remove and dispose of your asbestos products safely.
